Apart from IMAP or POP, you can also add Gmail as an exchange account. This will let Gmail push the new messages in Iphone Mail but remember adding Gmail as an exchange account will replace your existing exchange account.

How to access Gmail in iPhone Mail using IMAP?

Follow the steps given below in order to access Gmail in iPhone using the IMAP access.

  1. Open settings from your iPhone home screen.
  2. Open the “Mail” category and select “Accounts”
  3. Tap on “Add account” and select “Google”.
  4. Now, under “sign in with your Google account” option enter your Gmail address and tap “Next”.
  5. Enter your Gmail password and tap next once again.
  6. Enter the code you will receive on your phone or code generated by the Google authenticator (only if you have 2 step verification enable in Gmail)
  7. Ensure that the iPhone mail is enabled.

Note: Here you will also have the option to enable contacts, calendars and notes.

  1. Open settings from your iPhone home screen.
  2. Tap on “Mail” followed by “Add account”.
  3. Select “Other” and press “Add Mail account”.
  4. Enter your name, Gmail address & Password in the respective fields and tap on “Next”.
  5. Choose “POP” if it is not selected already.
  6. Enter the following settings.
    1. Host Name under incoming Mail server: pop.gmail.com
    2. Username under incoming Mail server: Your full Gmail address
    3. Host Name under outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com
    4. Username under outgoing Mail server: Your full Gmail address
  7. Enter your password and tap “Save”.
  8. Now tap on “Newly added Gmail account”.
  9. Under outgoing mail server tap on “smtp.gmail.com”.
  10. Choose smtp.gmail.com under primary server.
  11. Type “465” under server port and tap done.

Note: You will get the copies of all the mails you will send from iPhone through your Gmail account. You should ignore and delete these copies.  You may also disable “recent” mode of Gmail to stop receiving these copies. Remember you should disable “recent” mode only if you don’t use your account from any other device simultaneously.

Accessing a Google Apps mail Account in iPhone Mail

The process to access a Google Apps email account in iPhone is a little bit different as given below:

  1. First of all, make sure that “POP” access is enabled in your Google Apps mail account.
  2. Now, open setting in your iPhone and go to “mail”.
  3. Tap on “Add Account” followed by “Other”.
  4. Select “POP” and enter your name and Google apps mail address in the respective fields.
  5. Write “Google Apps” under the description.
  6. Enter the following setting under the Incoming Mail server
    1. Host Name: pop.gmail.com
    2. Username: Enter “recent:” followed by your full email address. For example – if your email address is [email protected] then enter “recent:[email protected]”.
    3. Password: Gmail Password
  7. Enter the following setting under the Outgoing Mail server (SMTP)

    1. Host Name: smtp.gmail.com
    2. Username: your full email address\
    3. Password: Gmail Password

    • Host Name: smtp.gmail.com

  • Now, Under the Drafts Mail box, select “On the server (Gmail)/Drafts”.

  • Ensure that “incoming uses SSL” and “outgoing uses SSL” is on.
